History
and Tradition The Walsh family has been farming in California
for generations. Dean Walsh established Purpak Inc. in 1986 to grow and market
certified organic fruits and vegetables worldwide. In 1991, he established W.W.
Farms, Inc. to grow and market organic Chinese Vegetables, and in 1993 D.W. Berry Farms,
Inc. was formed, one of the premier strawberry growers in California. |
Purepak, Inc. grows and markets over 57
different fruits and vegetables year-round and distributes domestically and
internationally. Beginning in 1990, Purepak, Inc. began to export its certified
organic fruits and vegetables worldwide to Japan, Canada, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Great
Britain. |
What Is Organic Produce?
It's simple to define and hard to grow: Organic produce is produce grown
without the use of synthetic chemical pesticides and herbicides. The California Organic
Foods Act of 1990 (California Health and Safety Code section 16569.20 et seq.) is the law
that governs organic farming in California. It is anticipated that the U.S. federal
law governing organic agriculture will go into effect sometime in 1998, providing a
national standard for organic farming in the United States. |

|
| Why Organic Products? Scientific and
statistical studies worldwide have proven that harmful effects of chemical pesticides and
herbicides on our children, our earth and ourselves. Since 1986, our experience has
shown that organically grown produce is bigger, more colorful and more flavorful than
conventionally grown produce. Fresh organic produce, and products manufactured from
organic produce, provide you and your family with a healthy and safe diet. |
 |
How Do You Grow Organic Produce? Organic
ranches require an intensive management program consisting of individuals whose expertise
in farming practices can accommodate the strenuous requirements of organic growing.
Organic growing is labor-intensive- Because we cannot use chemicals, our fields must be
watched on a daily basis to prevent the spread of weeds and pests. |
| PUREPAK
has developed new methods and explored new technology in order to be a leader in he field
of organic growing. |
| What is Certified Organic Produce?
Certified organic produce means that a third-party independent certification
organization has conducted a full and complete review of Purepak's farming methods,
soil, product handling and produce, and has certified that PUREPAK complies with all of
the rules and regulations governing the growing of organic produce in California.
When the U.S. federal law takes effect, each independent certification organization must
be accredited by the U.S.D.A.. This means that certified organic produce will soon carry
the U.S.D.A. stamp, a guarantee that the produce conforms to the strict standards of the
U.S. government. |
| Who Eats, Drinks and Wears Organic Products? For
each of the past five years, the U.S. market for organic produce has risen over 22%-35%
nationwide. PUREPAK now farms on over 5000 crop acres in California, and employs over 700
people to grow, cultivate, market and manage its certified organic fresh and processed
products. |
